A week in Scotland and thoughts naturally turn to the ubiquitous tartan, well it is everywhere!

Several years ago - during a visit to Cardoness - I found myself truly taken by the urge to produce my own tartans based on the colours of the seasons in Scotland. The skies, the stone, the highlands and the heather. I created a collection of twelve, one for each month and I still love them all.

  • The colours of a January day with weak sunlight, a streak of white in the palest of blue skies, the intense red of a robin's breast and long purple shadows.
  • February in the Cairngorms! Bluer skies, white snow, dark brown peat, browns and greys - of rocks and ice.
  • Sunlight on rocks and daffodils, spring greens and rushy glens!
  • Heathers, clear blue skies and pine needle green.
  • Summer on it's way bringing warmth and ice cream sunsets.
  • Blue skies, babbling brooks and clover in leaf and flower.
  • Northern lights in northern skies!
  • Blue skies and the colours of Autumn setting the glens alight!
  • The shelter of pine forests and gold and yellow lichens on exposed rocks.
  • Mellow fruitfulness. Bright sunsets, bracken and berries.
  • Winter skies, low sunlight picking out the remnants of Autumn.
  • Christmas! Berries bright on Holly, Ice blue skies with vapour trails and long, low golden sunsets.
