Another of my first loves... his painting Carnation Lily, Lily, Rose.
This painting in the words of Charles Richard Cammell - one of the authors of World Famous Paintings, mentioned in my previous blog - Sargent "...had painted a picture that became instantly famous, and has so remained. The Barnard girls, with their Chinese lanterns, in a glory of "carnation, lily, lily, rose", had become immortal".
Everything you need to know about this painting - with the exception of knowing it's one of those paintings I'd happily stuff under my coat while a very good friend caused a distraction - can be found by clicking the image of it, which will take you to the Tate site and the story of how it was painted, who the girls were and where the title came from.
